Authentic Blogging | Keeping it Real in an Inauthentic World

I’ve recently found myself increasingly frustrated with the world of blogging. How does one achieve authentic blogging in an inauthentic world?

Over the past two weeks I’ve met with dozens of bloggers from across Canada and different walks of life. We’ve chatted about various things related to social media; from the algorithms of Instagram and Facebook to bought followers and fake engagement. Yeah, people do that guys, and it’s GROSS. This world changes constantly with new rules and trends and it can be incredibly exhausting trying to keep up.

As much as I’d like to say I don’t care, the fact of the matter is that I have to care to a certain extent. To get the travel opportunities, the paid gigs, the invites… you have to be at least somewhat business savvy. You have to work hard, stay current, and be willing to try new things. I’m okay with that, but I’m also not willing to change who I am or how I do things in order to secure those things.

Oh travel, how I love thee!

Authenticity is a tricky word. It can be interpreted differently by different people, but for me it means being myself 100% of the time. I don’t pretend to be a fancy person. I can’t act like flying to Toronto to attend an event is no big deal, because it is for me! Every time an email lands in my inbox offering me something cool I’m incredibly grateful and blown away by it.

I also don’t want it to appear that I have it together all the time, because I don’t. I don’t always look great and I spend a majority of my days chasing my kids around and feeding them. I take my own photos that I post, and I am no photographer!

This blog and all my social channels are just me. What you see is my life and it’s not always Instagram worthy. I’m just like you, a Mama trying her hardest to balance loving her kids and keep some sense of balance. I clean my own house, I cook my own meals, and I have a wardrobe full of sweat pants and t-shirts. I spend time outside in my garden and I attend church on Sunday mornings. I homeschool, which I know a lot of people think is totally crazy, but I’m okay with that.

Sometimes I do super cool things and I am incredibly grateful for every opportunity that comes my way. I try to appreciate them all and I do work hard to bring those things to light, but I’m aware that it could all go away in an instant. One day those emails and opportunities will stop coming. This industry is not dependable and nothing is ever guaranteed.

I tell you this because I want you to be aware of who you are following and where my heads at. Whether you’re a Mom or a brand, you need to know who you’re dealing with here. You need to realize who the woman behind the words is.

It feels weird to pose. This makes more sense to me.

I’m just Carolyn, a wife and Mom of three young kids who lives in the country. I don’t have any form of childcare or a cleaner and I write and answer emails when I have the time. I educate my kids from home and won’t do anything I feel will compromise my beliefs and ideals – no matter the pay offered. I am not a professional photographer and cannot afford the latest tech gadgets or fashion. I LOVE to travel, but I have to save and budget for it like everybody else. I’m a goofball and kind of a nerd when it comes to thinks like Disney movies and T-Rex jokes. Seriously… I’m fairly certain my husband thinks I’m a huge dork.

I won’t change who I am to get ahead. I won’t ‘play the game’ to make myself look cooler or more popular than I truly am. I don’t often take photos in gorgeous locations with a far off look in my eyes. Everything you see is real, from my numbers to my expressed thoughts. If that’s not good enough for you, then I can point you towards thousands of other bloggers who have decided to go that route.

Attending Disney Social Media Moms was a DREAM COME TRUE for me! I never thought I’d make that list!

Maybe you come online to escape the realities of life, and that’s okay if you do! But likely my pages won’t be for you. All you’ll get here is authentic blogging. I write because I enjoy it. I write to connect with other Mothers going through the same things I am. And I write to hopefully inspire and help others live their best lives with their children now (Please tell me my Disney posts help you plan your vacations!)

I love having you here, truly, but I won’t be offended if you prefer to follow someone prettier or more glamorous. Maybe someone who white washes all her images or travels 24/7 is your thing. Different strokes for different folks. But if you’re all about the REAL Mamahood, please stick around. Say hi now and then. Share my posts and page with other like minded Mamas. I’ll love you forever for it.

All my love,
