Treating Flare Ups from Baby Eczema with AVEENO

Two out of my three children have suffered from baby eczema. They’ve unfortunately inherited dry skin from me, and I still get flare ups this time of year. Although my oldest has mostly grown out of it, our one year old still gets it bad.

Baby eczema is a red skin rash that generally appears inside the elbows, behind the knees, on the cheeks, and around the wrists and hands. Some children will even get it behind their ears. It can become so irritated that it will crack, bleed, and sometimes get infected, requiring a prescription cream.

Treating Baby Eczema Flare Ups

It’s not know for sure what causes baby eczema, but it does tend to be genetic. Allergens, pollutants, or the change in the weather can all cause flare ups. The key to treating baby eczema is calming it down before it becomes a bigger issue or more painful issue.

We’ve found a few helpful ways to treat these flare ups and wanted to pass these tips into you!

1. Frequent lukewarm baths.
Having a hot bath can actually irritate baby’s skin even more, but daily lukewarm baths can help keep the skin from getting infected and overly dry. When washing our little one’s hair and body, we’ve chosen to use a product to specifically target restoring moisture in her skin, like Aveeno Baby Eczema Care Wash with Active Naturals Colloidal Oatmeal. I myself have oatmeal baths when my skin flares up, so I know how good it must feel on my kids!

2. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!
Post bath, it’s time to moisturize! I slather our daughter in Aveeno Baby Eczema Care Nighttime Balm, taking special care to target the areas behind her knees and inside her elbows. You can feel how thick this balm is, and I know it’ll keep doing its job all through the night while she sleeps. If a flare up happens earlier in the day, I simply add the nighttime balm to those specific areas.

3. Avoid fragrant skin products.
I try to avoid putting anything on her skin except her Aveeno Baby Eczema Care Moisturizing Cream. It’s a classic case of ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!’ Personally, I’ve never been able to use scented soaps or creams without my legs becoming incredibly itchy, so we stick to the Aveeno brand for adult moisturizers, too. There’s a bottle in nearly every room of the house!

4. Choose your laundry products carefully.
We’ve gone through many different brands! I can tell if one isn’t going to work for our family because within an hour of my oldest wearing a shirt, he’s complaining about being itchy. We have to avoid dryer sheets and stick with a natural based laundry detergent.

5. Stick with breathable materials.
Cotton is your best friend to keep your body cool! Sweaty babies tend to get outbreaks, so try to stick with breathable materials for clothing and bedtime. Anything synthetic that rubs and irritates will not do them any favours!

Baby eczema is never a fun thing to go through for you or your child, but many kids do grow out of it after the age of five. For now, try implementing some of my suggestions above and avoid those triggers!
