Why I Share About Our Homeschooling Journey

I do not pretend to be an expert on anything. I know some stuff, *ahem* Disney, but I don’t hold any degrees. I am, however, a Mom who loves to share! I’ve always loved to share, which was one of the reasons I started Moments in Mommyland. So today I want to talk about why I’ve decided to be open about and share our homeschooling journey on social media.

I’ve been asked several times why I share so much about homeschooling. You’ll find photos on my personal facebook page, instastories on my Instagram and the occasional blog post. Despite what some may think, I don’t put this stuff out there to make anyone feel guilty about choosing another educational path.

This is why I share our homeschooling journey:

1. To Inspire
I want to show others how wonderful homeschooling can be! I want to demonstrate that if I can do it, you canĀ do it! I know what you’re thinking… you ‘just can’t.’ I am far from the smartest, most patient, or most crafty Mom around. Trust me! But I am passionate, I love spending time with my kids, and I believe in following what I feel God has called me to do. I hope that comes across in my posts (you can read more about why we decided to homeschool here.)

2. To Educate
I want to help others who are considering homeschooling their kids. I myself am only on my second year, but I am happy to help others in whatever way I can! I’ll show you our curriculum, our schedule, or the resources we use. I’m an open book! I do this because others did this for me, and that’s just how the homeschooling community is. We like to support and take care of our own!

3. To Advocate
Homeschoolers get a lot of flack. A lot of flack! You often hear jokes about how kids who are educated at home have no social skills, are stuck in the house all day, and are completely out of touch from the real world. This is so far from the truth! People will tell me point blank that we’re doing a disservice to our children and that in some countries our kids would be taken away from us for such a choice. It hurts, but I know it comes from a place of misunderstanding. They just have no idea, so I speak out. I show the truth.

4. To Document
I’m sharing our life, and our homeschooling journey is a part of that life. Others share photos of their kids school programs, the crafts they made in class, or their field trip to the local zoo. I’m doing the same thing, except I’m around my kids a lot more than the average school Mom! Our learning is such a part of our day that there is no real separation between life and school. It all intertwines.

5. Because I love it
Some days are hard, there is no denying that. But getting to be the one who hears my child read for the first time? Or watch them work through a math problem? Or see them fall in love with a certain subject or project? It’s beautiful. I feel lucky to be witnessing it, and I naturally want to share my joy with the world.

It’s okay if you see my posts and scroll on past them. It’s okay if you would never even consider homeschooling your own kids. But it’s also okay if you want to ask me questions and learn more about what we’re doing it. In fact, I encourage it!

These are just a few of the reasons why I’m sharing our homeschooling journey.
