I Really Like Being With My Kids - We love each other!
This Motherhood Journey

I Really Like Being With My Kids

I really like being with my kids. I think most people value spending time with their children, but sometimes I wonder if I’m abnormal for liking it as much as I do.

Here are a few comments I’ve gotten about our lifestyle of homeschooling and traveling:

“Don’t you think it’d be nice to send your kids to school once Summer break is over? Aren’t you sick of having them around?”

“Why don’t you and your husband go away without the kids? It’d be a real vacation and you could have more fun.”

“Don’t you wish you had those 7 hours a day to do what you want to do?”

Actually, I don’t want my kids to be away from me for seven hours a day. I don’t really like the idea of leaving them for a week or more. And I love watching them learn and grow together instead of apart.

I’m not saying that anyone who sends their kids to regular school or travels without them doesn’t love their kids. That’s ridiculous. Of course they do! But my husband and I definitely seem to value it on a different level.

I think of our life as a giant circle with many rings. At the core of that circle is our faith in Jesus. Our belief in Him dictates how and why we live the way we do. Around that core is family – it comes first. Our goal is to build that trust and love within our own walls. Next is our friendships, jobs, and our community. Everything else comes after.

My family is pretty awesome and I love learning about their personalities. My oldest is hilarious, contemplative, and affectionate. My second is strong-willed and determined, but loves people fiercely. My third we’re still learning about, but she’s spunky and full of character!

There are days where these kids drive me to the brink of insanity. Even I need alone time! But for the most part, they’re cool people. Whether we’re at home or on the road, I truly enjoy being with them for the 12+ hours a day we’re awake.

I feel a great responsibility for how my children turn out. I believe it is me and my husbands job to train them and guide them while they’re young. Because of this, we don’t send them to regular school. We’re doing our best to prepare them to be kind and responsible adults.

Keeping them home is not just about protecting them, though that does come into play. It’s also about giving them the attention they need, the security to make mistakes, and to individualize their learning and follow their passions. We’re customizing their childhood.

So no, I don’t need to spend hours a day away from my kids. In fact, I don’t want to. One day they’ll be grown up and I’ll have more time than I know what to do with.

For now, I’m enjoying them. I really like being with my kids. Every single day.
